Signs Your Siding Needs to Be Replaced
Siding is your home's raincoat. In a climate as wet as ours, when it starts to fail the damage does not stay on the surface — it works into the walls. Here is how to tell when it is time to replace rather than repaint.
Warping, buckling, or loose boards
Siding that is wavy, pulling away, or loose to the touch has usually lost its seal against moisture. Paint will not save it.
Rot, soft spots, or fungus
Press on suspect areas. If the material is soft, crumbling, or showing fungus, moisture has gotten in — common on north-facing and shaded walls here.
Rising energy bills
Old or damaged siding, and the failed insulation often behind it, lets heat escape. Creeping heating bills can point straight to your exterior envelope.
Peeling paint on the inside walls
A surprising one: if interior paint or wallpaper is peeling, moisture may be passing through failed siding from the outside in.
Frequent repainting
If you repaint every few years to keep the place looking decent, modern siding will look better, last longer, and cost less over time than the endless paint cycle.
